Why people choose automatic

Learning to drive means managing a lot at once: steering, mirrors, road signs, other traffic, pedestrians, and your own nerves. A manual car adds clutch control and gear changes on top of all that. An automatic takes them away.

For a lot of learners that is the difference between struggling and getting on with it. Stalling on a hill stops being a thing that happens. Moving off in traffic gets simpler. In a city like Sheffield, where you are often stopping and starting on a gradient, that is a real advantage.

The one thing to know first

An automatic licence lets you drive automatic cars only. A manual licence lets you drive both. If you pass in an automatic and later want to drive a manual, you would need to take another practical test in a manual car.

For most people that is not a problem — the majority of new cars sold are automatic, and electric cars are all automatic. But it is worth a moment's thought before you book, and we are happy to talk it through.

What it costs

Exactly the same as manual: from £37 an hour on our 20-hour package, £45 for a single hour. Some schools charge a premium for automatic tuition. We do not. Full breakdown on the prices page.
